What have the Sultanate achieved in the field of environment?

The sultanate had achieved a lot in the field of environment since the renascence: The sultanate had achieved a lot in the field of environment since the renascence:

  • First country in the Gulf region to pass a comprehensive law on environment.
  • First Arabic prize in the field of environment: Sultan Qaboos Environment Award.
  • First ministry at the level of Arab countries in the field of environment.
  • Classified as one of the top ten countries in environment preservation by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

  • Peace and Environment award in 2007.
  • Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs got a certificate of appreciation from the United Nations Environment Programme in the field of protection of the ozone layer.
  • Best Tourist Destination Award in 2008 by the magazine "Vogue" and printed "Conde Nast."
  • Muscat Municipality was awarded for the best experiences and practices of public services provided to audience. The competition was organized by Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations in early 2002.

What is the Climate Change Convention?

It is one of the conventions adopted and opened for signature at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro, in 1992 and was named as the "United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change." This agreement aims to achieve stability in the levels of greenhouse gases emissions to prevent dangerous changes in climate. The Convention legally obliges all signatory countries to address climate change problems. Signatory countries were divided into two groups within the different levels of commitments: 1. Parties included and not included in Annex I of the Convention. 2. Parties included in Annex II, former members of the Co-operation and Development Organization in 1992, and is now obliged to provide 24 developing countries with "new and additional financial resources" to help them address problems of climate change.




What is Kyoto Protocol?

A Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention, that was ratified at the Earth Summit, the United Nations Environment and Development conference, in Japan in 1997. The Protocol establishes two sets of commitments, the first group includes commitments for all contracting states, and the second group provides commitments of developed countries and economies in transition, towards the developing countries. In addition, it committed 39 developed nations to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases at a rate of 5.2 per cent from 1990 levels (the first commitment period 2008 - 2012).




What greenhouse gases are to be reduced?

Reducing greenhouse gases produced by industrial countries is the primary goal of the climate change conventions. And greenhouse gases are divided according to its source to six gases, which are: carbon dioxide - CO2 (source: fossil fuel combustion and deforestation, and agriculture); methane - CH4 (Source: agriculture, land use change; biomass burning, landfills); nitrous oxide N2O (source: fossil fuel combustion; industry, agriculture); perfluorinated carbon compounds (Source: Industry, manufacturing); sulfur hexafluoride - SF6, (source: electricity transmission, and manufacturing industries); HFCs (Source : air conditioners, refrigerators).




How and to whom should I report environmental issues in my area?

What common behaviors are harmful to the environment?

Community practice some behaviors that are harmful to the environment directly or indirectly. The most famous ones are: disposing waste in non-designated areas, burning materials that produces greenhouse and toxic gases without regional municipalities’ permission, logging without a license, digging wells without a license, and others. These behaviours impacts negatively on the environment, therefore; the community must be aware of such behaviours and must not practice them, for it is our duty as citizens..




What is the best way to dispose e-waste?

The Sultanate still lacks means of solid waste management, and therefore the government placed this issue among its priorities and designed a strategy to build a healthy ergonomically designed landfills for solid waste management in general, and started implementing the strategy by building AL Amrat sanitary landfill. So, until the Sultanate's strategy of building sanitary landfills in various regions of the Sultanate is complete, the best way to dispose solid waste starts through rationalizing the consumption of these materials by not rushing to buy modern unneeded devices, second, maintenance of old devices or sending them to families in need, and thirdly, reducing the use of cheap devices that are easily damaged and are difficult to maintain.




What materials can I recycle in the Sultanate?
