In a significant step reflecting Oman’s commitment to empowering community groups through innovative digital tools, the Ministry of Social Development launched the "Maksab" platform in May 2023. As the first smart Omani platform dedicated to supporting social security families and low-income individuals, it serves as a licensed gateway for job seekers to find secure and sustainable sources of income.
In its first five-year plan, the platform aims to list over 1,000 products, offering an integrated digital space that enhances the participation of targeted groups in the path of economic development, in line with Oman Vision 2040 and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The platform has already begun making a tangible impact, enabling over 40 individuals to work as delivery representatives in Muscat Governorate, with upcoming expansion plans to cover all governorates and serve home business owners, consumers, individuals, institutions, and delivery companies alike.
The Ministry announced the eligibility requirements for joining the platform, which include being an Omani national and holding a valid home business licence approved by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion. For cosmetic products, an additional certificate approved by the Ministry of Health is required. Applicants must also commit to the accuracy of the product information, comply with health standards for storing and preserving food and beverages, provide clear labelling for perishable or fragile items, adhere to delivery deadlines once a product is ordered, and update the availability status of products listed on the platform.
The platform promotes digital participation among its beneficiaries by offering training courses through the Maksab wallet, engaging users in online opinion polls conducted by the Ministry, and receiving suggestions and feedback aimed at improving the platform’s effectiveness. As a result, the variety of products has expanded to 12 categories, and the number of platform users has exceeded 8,000, with more than 200 online shops launched by productive families, entrepreneurs, and low-income individuals.
Maksab has received positive feedback for its user-friendly interface, easy access to product categories, 24/7 technical support, secure electronic payment system, and the activation of a digital wallet for each customer on the platform.
